Counselling in Whitstable
Sunny Austin

I offer in-person counselling in Whitstable from a quiet, comfortable space where you can pause and begin to make sense of what’s happening for you.

People come to counselling for many different reasons - feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low, stuck, or struggling in relationships.

In our work, we pay close attention to what’s going on for you - what you’re thinking and feeling.

Over time, things often begin to feel more manageable, and it becomes easier to respond differently.

We can take it from there.

My approach

I work with people who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or aren’t sure how to move forward.

I offer a steady, non-judgemental space where you can explore difficult thoughts and feelings.

In our sessions, we stay close to your experience - what you’re noticing and feeling. I may come back to something you’ve just said, so we can take a closer look at it together.

We can take time to understand what’s going on, so changes feel more grounded and lasting.

Our work is collaborative. You set the direction, and I help you stay with what feels most important.

Some people come with something specific they want to focus on, others want to take more time with things. We can work in a way that fits what you need.

My approach is primarily humanistic, drawing from person-centred and existential therapy alongside other integrative approaches where helpful.

About me

I first came to counselling in my early thirties, during a difficult chapter in my life. I was overwhelmed and unsure how to move forward, but the support I received was life-changing.

The warmth, understanding, and genuine care I experienced helped me feel grounded again and begin to move on. That experience eventually led me to train as a counsellor, and continues to shape how I work today.

Portrait of Sunny Austin, counsellor in Whitstable

I qualified in Humanistic Counselling in 2012. Since then, I’ve worked with a wide range of people across NHS Talking Therapies, community services, employment support schemes, and in private practice.

Over the years, I’ve supported people with a range of challenges, including:

  • depression and low mood

  • anxiety

  • grief and loss

  • work-related stress

  • low self-esteem

  • family and relationship difficulties

I have worked alongside people of different ages and backgrounds, often during times of change, loss, or uncertainty.

Some people specifically look for a male counsellor, while others are more focused on finding an approach and space that feels right for them.

My approach is grounded in person-centred and existential thinking, and has developed into an integrative way of working that stays closely focused on each person’s individual experience.

I will always be grateful for the time, care and sensitivity you gave me in a dark period.”  Adam

Beginning therapy

What happens in a first counselling session?

Once you get in touch, I’ll offer a short phone call so you can ask questions and get a sense of whether we might work well together.
If you prefer, we can have this first conversation by email or text instead.

We’ll then arrange your first in-person appointment.

Your first session is a chance to talk about what’s troubling you and begin to identify what you’d like to focus on.

There is no pressure to share more than feels manageable.

It’s also an opportunity for us both to get a sense of whether we’re a good fit.

At the end of the session, we’ll check in about how it felt, and you can decide whether you’d like to continue.

You really got me. Thank you so much.”‍ ‍Sarah
